My granddaughter said my laundry basket was the ugliest thing in my house
I've never written anything like this, so I'll start with a confession: I'm not a writer, and I'm not someone who goes around telling other women how to keep house.
But a couple of weeks ago four different people asked me about my laundry basket, of all things, and I've explained it so many times now that it felt easier to just write it all down.
It started when my granddaughter came to stay for the weekend and made a face at the thing sitting in the corner of my bathroom.
Grandma, why is your laundry basket the ugliest thing in the whole house?
Honestly? She had a point. A cracked beige plastic hamper, gone gray around the rim, that I'd been pushing behind the door every time company came over for the better part of ten years.
The old one. It lived behind the bathroom door whenever anyone came by.
I never really chose it. Nobody sets out to buy something ugly. You grab the cheap plastic one meaning to replace it soon, and then a decade goes by.
How it happens
A laundry basket is the last thing anybody thinks of as pretty. It's a chore, not something you pick out because you love it.
So the big-box stores sell us plastic bins and floppy mesh hampers, every one of them the color of a hospital hallway, and we toss one in the cart without thinking twice and then quietly resent it in the corner of every room.
And because it's "just a laundry basket," you never get around to doing anything about it. It's always the next thing on a to-do list that never gets to the bottom.
What I got wrong
Here's the part I had backwards. I thought a laundry basket had to be plastic to be practical. Easy to wipe down, keeps its shape, gets the job done.
Turns out a quilted fabric one does every bit of that and looks lovely too. It stands up on its own even when it's empty, the fabric wipes clean, and it folds flat when you don't need it. It just happens to have a picture on it instead of being the color of nothing.
Practical or pretty was never an either-or. Nobody had ever shown me the pretty one. It took me this long to figure that out.
Before and after. Same corner behind the bathroom door, and only one of them ever got hidden when company came.
Mine is the Sunny Joy
It's from Ella & Finn Boutique, a small husband-and-wife studio that has spent years quietly making the everyday things in our homes a little lovelier.
Mine is the Sunny Joy, a quilted basket with a big yellow sun over rainbow hills and a whole meadow of wildflowers stitched all the way around it, in every happy color you can think of. But they make dozens of designs, from flowers to little dogs, which I'll get back to.
The day it arrived. I didn't expect to be charmed by a laundry basket, and yet here we are.
It's well made. The quilting is soft but sturdy, so it stands up by itself whether it's full or empty, and it has strong canvas handles for hauling it up the stairs. The design goes all the way around, so it looks nice from every side.
And it comes in three sizes, so there's one for a small bathroom and one big enough for a whole family's towels.
What happened when company came over
These days it sits right out in the open, in the corner of my bedroom, where the plastic one would never have been allowed.
Four different people asked me about it a couple of weeks ago. My friend Joyce, who never notices anything, asked where I got it. And my granddaughter, the one who started all this, has decided the big yellow sun belongs to her and says good morning to it every time she visits.
Not once in my life has anyone asked me about a laundry basket. Now it's the first thing people bring up.
In the bathroom, out in plain sight for the first time in ten years.
Three things I've learned since
It stands up on its own.
That's something the plastic one stopped doing the day it cracked, no brittle corners, no warping as it got older. If you want it perfectly crisp and straight every time, just drop a towel or a few clothes inside.
It folds away.
When my daughter visits and needs the guest room cleared out, it folds flat and goes up on the closet shelf, which the stiff plastic one never could.
A pretty one actually gets used.
The funny thing is the laundry really goes in it now, because it's not something you want to avoid looking at. The plastic one mostly just had a pile growing next to it.
About the price
I want to be upfront about this, because it's the part that made me suspicious.
The Sunny Joy starts at $49.95. It was $165.95.
My first thought was that's a lot for a laundry basket, until I added up what I'd spent over the years replacing cracked plastic ones, and hiding every single one of them behind a door.
Ella & Finn Boutique is a small studio that sells directly, no middleman. Right now they're having their Studio Clearance to make room for the new collection, so there's still stock in every design for the moment, but once a design is gone, they don't make it again.
I did what I'm guessing you're doing right now and read the reviews before I ordered. Over 11,540 customers, rating them 4.8 stars. Real people, real photos, and the odd honest gripe, which, if I'm being truthful, made me trust it more than a wall of perfect fives would have.
Then I ordered a smaller one for the bathroom, too.
What I'd tell you if we were friends
If you and I were sitting out on the porch and you asked me, here's what I'd say.
Go take a look at the laundry basket in your bathroom. If it's plastic, and cracked, and you hide it when people come over, you've simply never been offered a nicer one. Now you have.
It's a small thing. But the little ugly things in a house wear on you more than you realize, and this is an easy, cheerful one to fix.
Two practical things. The clearance is on right now, and the most popular designs go first. And there are dozens to choose from, so there's bound to be one that's just you.
The plastic one went out with the recycling, and I haven't missed it once.
